Cinema and another ride

It has been a while since I went to the cinema and a good friend suggested I might enjoy Dr Strange. So I went to my local cinema in Wells to see the film, surprisingly it was in 3D which I was not sure about, but decided to see it anyway.

A comic book movie from Marvel with brilliantly cast Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead role, he brings to life the character that is Dr Strange. The special effects are supreme, and, the CGI is fully justified in bringing to life the surroundings of this Super Hero. The dialogue is a masterpiece encompassing the script (screenwriter John Spaihts) Scott Derrickson was chosen to Direct the movie by Marvel Studios and he also co wrote the screenplay with C. Robert Carghill. Dr Steven Strange is a brilliant neurosurgeon, who enjoys a fabulous lifestyle befitting a very wealthy man, who has his career cut short by a devastating car accident. His hands are broken and the nerves are destroyed. His rehabilitation is thwarted at every turn , his moods spiral deeper and into a desperate and determined state of mind to find a cure. This takes him to Nepal and to meet “The Ancient One” brilliantly played by  Tilda Swinton A Zen teacher, with strange methods in helping Dr Strange’s spiritual journey, and the mastery of magic, throughout the film. An actor I really like is Ejiofor Chiwetel (among others Love Actually and 10 years a Slave) and he plays Mordo and Mads Mikkelsen (played Le Shiffre in the Bond film Casino Royale) another great actor. The film is a journey not usual to the normal Comic Book Hero genre but nonetheless does keep you mesmerised by the special effects and the vivid colours, the characters are solid and effectively create a bond for the audience, with twists and turns, and in this multi-layered experience the audience is held throughout. Having watched it in 3D I cannot imagine that viewing in 2D will have the same desired effect. 3D is fantastic! It is a great film, but to do it credit in a review would be to give far too much away…………….  Go and see it

Yesterday we went on our usual Saturday Cycle Ride, the Saturday crew. Odd Balls Cycling Club  It was dedicated to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice 11.11.11 Rain was forecast, and at 6am the forecasters unfortunately got it right, it was pouring here in Wells and from messages relayed form Wick St Lawrence Jason Smith, (Best Friend and Adventurer, Challenger) click on this link Adventurer Jason Smith to find out more about this amazing friend. We arranged to meet for breakfast in Cheddar, I was riding from Wells and they would start from Ebon Road Crem in Worle. It was raining when I set out and it rained all the way, Theale, through to Wedmore and on to Cheddar, by this time my feet were soaking wet through my trainers, but the clothing held fast and I was dry underneath. The Simply Gorgeous Tea Room was unfortunately shut when we got to Cheddar so we went to our “Alternate” The Bath Arms, Cheddar John Pendleton, James Pendleton, Jason, Phil Pearson and myself, just the 5 of us this ride. Breakfast and hot coffee, a very welcome respite from the wet and cold. Breakfast was a variety of Bacon Breakfast Rolls, full English and Poached Eggs and toast for me, Full English too much for me (altho most Saturday I would have one!) and the banter was soon flowing covering all sorts of subjects from the obvious cycling to hair cuts (odd considering most of us have very little hair!) Nice breakfast but time to move, this was a short one this week as some had time schedules to work to this morning, I had decided that because of the weather I would only do 25 miles. My feet were wet and cold and the rain was still falling, and it would rain all the way back to Wells. I would normally stop and take photos of the countryside, but today it was just too wet and too cold, so just a few on here below.

I do want to mention  La Chasse, Hunter Gathering for Chefs and their Van Driver. Whilst travelling through and around  Wedmore, Somerset this La Chasse van passed me twice. Now I know you will think there is a complaint coming, but on the contrary, the driver gave me the whole road and passed with 10-12 feet to spare. with the rain and wind I was very grateful, and for a change nice to be able to thank a van driver instead of cursing them. I had had a number of near misses this morning from drivers passing far too close. This would have been bad enough on a good clear morning but with rain and wind it was a scary ride, even with high power flashing lights and fluorescent clothing some people just don’t care and I believe some of them consider it a sport!!

Arriving back in Wells wet and cold I had covered 24 miles, and had the weather been fine I would have done a couple circuits of Wells to clock up 30 miles, but it was time to finish :-) So, get the bike in and a cup of tea and a shower……… see the Strava link below and see what my ride was all about.

Sunday morning was such a change from the day before, the sun was shining, blue sky, no wind, and unseasonably warm, we should have postponed 24 hours!

Church is always first on Sunday, communion on Remembrance Sunday, followed by a few problems at work (this after the problems Friday and then again Saturday) but these were cleared up and the rest of the day has been work free. Back home for a bacon sandwich and then press on with cleaning the bike, which after the weather it was filthy. 2 hours later it is sparkling, pristine and ready for the next outing. A trip out to the supermarket and that was my Sunday.
