Today I was fishing the “Woodland Lake” and, having laid out my gear , I wanted to get the rods in before finishing the set-up.
if I come with Rob, my son in law, or friends we always get set up and then Rods-in together ,but today on my own, I just got the rods set up with the bags and rigs, and cast in my 2 rods, one with my mix and a 12mm Red Robin and the other with a pink sweetcorn. (both popular hook baits here)
It is sunrise and the GoPro is set up toward the lake.
It was only about 6-7 minutes before I was into my first fish, and it certainly gave me a fight. it took about 15 minutes to land, and a nice positive start to the day
We all know about the “One that got away” chuckle, perhaps the carp broke the line, took the rig, or jumped off the hook nasty was about to be landed into the net, but in this case “The one that got away ” I actually landed,
I was positive it was around 20lb, and it also took a while to bring in, allowing it to take the line and reel in, always keeping the tension. But I managed to bring it in, getting into the net, and then putting the fish in the cradle, job done, very happy as it was a “lump”
It was at this point that I realised I hadn’t setup the Tripod, in fact it was still in the car!
So, I washed the carp down, the sling was quickly zipped, and I went over the the bank and lowered the sling into the lake, the holding line linked to the peg I had driven onto the ground.
I walked over to the car, a couple minutes to the car park, to get the tripod and scales, got set up, and pulled the cradle out of the water…….
Oh dear, in my hurry to get the carp in the water I had zipped up…. But only one side, and that beautiful carp had slipped out, probably as soon as I had placed it in the lake….
Moral of the story, always check the sling is fully zipped both ends….. The One That Got Away…..

When the Carp, or any fish really, if you are keeping them out of the water in a cradle then always have lake water to pour over them, so they aren’t stressed. If I am catching during the night I will place it in the slinging put it back into the water, before weighing . This was a chunky carp
When fishing in the carp lakes, we always see to get the bite alarm go off, take a bit of line and stop…… We always say “Its a Beemer” and invariably it is, they seem to take the bait, get hooked and just lay on the Bottom…. After maybe 10 seconds you know it’s going to the Bream and as you take up the tension, sure enough you can feel the fish but it offers no fight.
We are into another beemer!
This one is a carp! Another Carp, there are days when I go fishing and catch nothing, other days make one or two, today had been a good day, and we are into another carp.
But I always remember that catching is the bonus, being in this location, tranquility, the birds singing the sunshine, its already perfect…….
It did play me for around 20 minutes, so have edited it down. It was fun, I let it have the line when it wanted to swim. Out and back out and back, it went on for a while,
For me its not about bringing it in straight away as that is when you can lose the fish,………… but let it play, keep the tension, and get tired, eventually it will come to the bank, a little tired yes, and then you can get it in the net.
safely landed and into the cradle and some water , always remember to keep the fish calm and watered whilst out of the water. I had zero’d the scales when I set up, to account for the slings weight.
A Nice 11lb carp…. Some more water and then to get him back into the lake. I always find it better to release from the sling rather than a net. Perfect release, happy carp ready for the open lake once again.
